One Step Forward, Three Leaps Back

A universal truth about healing from injuries is that the process rarely goes exactly as we plan: smooth, instantaneous progress.

Healing is not a smooth linear trajectory to victory. Either physically or mentally. Recovering from pain can feel like a hard hike. There are inclines surmounted by small, quiet, hard-earned wins. But there are declines, where you wonder whether the progress you made on the the incline mattered at all...

Want 2026 to be the year you run consistently without pain, without confusion? I'm extending this discount code to the end of February...Now is the perfect time to jump in. Schedule a Discovery Call to get started.

I was working with a runner recently who had an old surgical injury crop up after her fall half marathon. She hadn't felt that knee in almost a year, but for some reason as she got back into running after her half, it decided to flare.

Then once we sorted out her knee, she sprained her ankle on a run.

Even though she did nothing wrong in her training or recovery, it felt as though she was taking one step forward, three leaps back. In the moment those frustrations can feel like they'll last forever.

All the while, you're losing fitness as you recover and work on your tedious rehab exercises (have you ever had to pay so much attention to how your muscles are firing?!).

As a rehab professional, I can see you at this point of healing. But I can also see the time and steps that you'll have to take to get you to your goals. Easy for me to say, I'm not the one dealing with pain... right?

Yes. But with the experience of watching hundreds of individuals confront their pain and injury, I can say with certainty that those who exhibit a dedication to the process and willingness to ride out the set backs are the ones who are most likely to succeed.

Not every injury is the same and some take longer to heal by their very nature. Don't lost hope thinking that you can control it all. Time is just as important variable to take into account as the right exercise program.

Having a physical therapist and coach be your experienced guide to chart future progress can help you navigate the setbacks and celebrate the victories.

So if you're dealing with pain while running and in the RVA area, reach out to me via email today and we can get to charting your road to recovery. [email protected].

Or, if you're ready to return to run after an injury or time off, you might be appropriate for my Virtual Return to Run Program!

"That's nice, but when can I run again?"
This is a quote from a new client of mine last month. After explaining the results and findings of his assessment, he got to the point and asked: "That's nice, but when can I run again?"  Sometimes as a clinician I can get wrapped up in clinical reasoning brain and forget the real underlying question. I'm trying to train myself to be better at thinking from the perspective of a runner and helpi...
Running for Two (Round Two)
This past weekend, I ran the Monument 10k at 15 weeks pregnant with my second. My mom joined as well and honestly, it was one of the most fun races I've ever done!  This is my second pregnancy, but I'm still learning how to adjust everyday to this new and changing experience. It helps me remember a lesson I try to tell my clients dealing with injury or coming back from time off running... ANN...
